Mexico’s Secretaría de Marina (SEMAR) launched Operación Salvavidas Verano 2026 in Ensenada on June 30, deploying 50 naval personnel to patrol the port city’s beaches through August 30. The two-month operation is part of the Navy’s annual Plan Marina effort to protect beachgoers at high-traffic coastal areas across the country.
The Ensenada deployment includes one oceanic patrol vessel, two DEFENDER-class rescue boats, two jet skis for water rescues, and seven land vehicles. Naval personnel are coordinating with local Civil Protection authorities to cover the coastline during peak summer season.
Beach Flag System and First Aid Posts
First-aid rescue posts staffed by naval lifeguards will operate along Ensenada’s beaches for the duration of the campaign. The Navy uses a three-color flag system to communicate water conditions to swimmers.
A green flag means conditions are safe for swimming. Yellow signals caution due to currents or changing weather. A red flag means the water is off limits, and swimmers should stay on shore.
The flag system is standard across Mexican beaches during Navy lifeguard operations. Beachgoers should check for posted flags before entering the water, especially at less-trafficked spots outside the main tourist areas.
Part of a Nationwide Summer Operation
The Ensenada launch mirrors similar operations along Mexico’s coastlines. In 2025, SEMAR deployed more than 2,300 personnel nationally for the summer lifeguard campaign, covering beaches from Quintana Roo to Nayarit between mid-July and late August. The 2026 Ensenada operation started slightly earlier, on June 30, likely reflecting the city’s position as a popular weekend destination for visitors from Southern California and Tijuana.
Ensenada’s most popular swimming beaches include Playa Hermosa and the beaches near the Hotel Coral and La Bufadora area. Ocean conditions along this stretch of Pacific coast can change quickly, with cold currents and strong surf common even in summer months.
Emergency Contact Numbers
For maritime emergencies in Ensenada, SEMAR’s local line is 646-136-67-63. The national toll-free number is 800-627-4621. Both lines are active for the duration of the operation.
