The municipal government of Mulegé has pushed back the registration deadline for its subsidized air conditioning program to April 15, giving residents just days to sign up before the cutoff. Officials cited high demand as the reason for the extension.

The program offers B-Air brand mini-split units at reduced prices through a partnership with Airesa, a local distributor. Three sizes are available at subsidized rates: a 1-ton unit for 3,700 pesos (about $200 USD), a 1.5-ton unit for 6,500 pesos (roughly $350 USD), and a 2-ton unit for 7,500 pesos (approximately $400 USD).

Installation Costs Not Included

The subsidized prices cover the units only. Installation is not included and will be an additional expense for buyers. Mini-split installation in Baja California Sur typically runs between 2,000 and 5,000 pesos depending on the complexity of the job and the contractor.

For context, unsubsidized mini-split units of comparable size in Mexico generally retail for 7,000 to 15,000 pesos, making the municipal program a significant discount. The 1-ton unit, suitable for a small bedroom or office, is priced at roughly half the standard retail cost.

Where to Register

Residents interested in the program can register at the Dirección de Desarrollo Municipal in Santa Rosalía, the municipal seat of Mulegé. Registration is also available at any municipal delegation office throughout the municipality, which spans a large stretch of central Baja California Sur including the towns of Mulegé, Santa Rosalía, Guerrero Negro, and Vizcaíno.

Eligibility requirements and additional details are available at those offices. The municipality has not publicly specified income thresholds or other qualifying criteria.

Summer Heat Season Approaching

Temperatures in Mulegé municipality routinely exceed 40°C (104°F) during the summer months, making air conditioning a near-essential household item rather than a luxury. Santa Rosalía and the town of Mulegé, both located on the Sea of Cortez coast, experience intense heat and humidity from June through October.

The April 15 deadline falls on a Tuesday. Residents with questions can visit their nearest delegation office during regular business hours before the cutoff.
