Mexicali recorded a temperature of 46.9°C (116.4°F) on May 11, breaking the city’s early-May heat record and falling just 0.1 degrees short of the all-time May high of 47.0°C set in 2000. Health authorities responded by activating hydration stations across the border city as part of the “Verano Seguro” (Safe Summer) program.

Hydration Stations Deployed Across the City

Under the Verano Seguro program, municipal health teams have set up hydration modules at multiple locations throughout Mexicali. The stations provide oral rehydration solution, fresh drinking water, and vital sign checks. Medical staff conduct hourly patrols of public parks to identify people showing signs of heat stroke.

For severe cases, station personnel coordinate ambulance dispatch through 911. The program targets the city’s most exposed populations, including people experiencing homelessness and outdoor workers.

Animals Also Receiving Aid

The hydration stations are not limited to human relief. Staff at the modules also provide water and food for stray and domestic animals seeking shade. Workers report receiving four to five dogs daily at the stations.

Mexicali’s municipal family development agency, DIF, has also activated its “SOS Hidrátate” program, which operates through fire stations, Municipal Social Well-Being Centers, Public Safety Units, and Municipal Medical Services clinics. Residents can call (686) 2335 281 for assistance or to report someone in a vulnerable situation.

A City That Knows Extreme Heat

Mexicali, located in the Sonoran Desert along the U.S. border across from Calexico, California, routinely ranks among the hottest cities in Mexico. Average July and August highs regularly exceed 40°C (104°F). In August 2025, the city shattered its all-time absolute record with a reading of 52.7°C (126.9°F), a figure that drew national attention.

Still, a 46.9°C reading in early May is extraordinary. Typical May highs in Mexicali average around 36°C to 38°C (97°F to 100°F), making this week’s spike roughly 10 degrees above normal for the season. The previous early-May record had stood since 2000.

Mexicali’s first heat-related death of the current season was reported in July 2025. Six heat deaths were recorded during a 2022 heat wave when temperatures hovered near 48°C for extended periods. Authorities urge residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, typically between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., and to stay hydrated even when indoors.
