A 56-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon after an apparent drowning while diving at Playa Comitán in La Paz, Baja California Sur. Bystanders at the beach reported the incident, and preliminary information from authorities points to drowning as the cause of death.
The victim’s name has not been released. Authorities have not disclosed whether the man was a local resident or a visitor, and no details about the circumstances of the dive have been made public.
A Popular Beach South of La Paz
Playa Comitán sits along the coastal corridor south of downtown La Paz, roughly 15 minutes by car from the city center. The beach is well known among La Paz residents and visitors for its calm, shallow waters and is a common launch point for snorkeling, kayaking, and shore diving. Several small restaurants and palapa shelters line the waterfront.
The area’s Sea of Cortez waters can present hazards that are not always obvious from shore. Currents can shift depending on tides and wind conditions. Water temperatures in early July typically hover around 80°F (27°C), warm enough that hypothermia is unlikely, but strong sun, dehydration, and physical exertion can all contribute to medical emergencies in the water.
