Firefighters in Los Cabos entered their second day battling a wildfire at El Palmar in Santa Rosa on Saturday, with authorities warning that weather conditions create up to a 90% chance the blaze could reignite despite being contained.
Fire Department Commander Omar Barreras Núñez said the fire is currently controlled but far from over. The area, located inland from San José del Cabo, has seen dry, hot conditions that make reignition highly likely even after flames are knocked down.
Multi-Agency Response From Across the Cape Region
Brigades from Todos Santos, El Pescadero, and Cabo San Lucas have joined San José del Cabo firefighters on the front lines. Active personnel, volunteers, and cadets are all working under a unified Incident Command System, with a command post set up at Bloquera El Palmar.
Operations paused briefly at 6 a.m. Saturday for brigade reorganization before resuming at 9 a.m. Water tankers, heavy machinery, and emergency equipment remain on scene. Crews are under continuous medical monitoring as they work through the heat.
Second Fire in Same Area This Week
This is the second wildfire recorded at El Palmar de Santa Rosa in recent days. The first blaze, reported on June 18, prompted an inter-agency response involving emergency crews from all three levels of government: municipal, state, and federal. During that initial fire, authorities evacuated families from surrounding areas as a precaution.
The Santa Rosa area sits several kilometers inland from the Los Cabos tourist corridor. While the fire does not directly threaten hotels or resort zones, smoke and potential road closures could affect travel in the San José del Cabo area. Residents and visitors near the zone should monitor conditions.
Authorities Urge Public to Stay Away
Commander Barreras Núñez thanked residents who have donated water, food, and supplies to the firefighting crews. He asked the public to stay away from the affected area entirely and to follow updates only through official municipal channels, not social media rumors.
The Los Cabos municipal government has not yet announced when it expects full suppression of the fire. Given the 90% reignition probability, brigades are expected to remain deployed for at least several more days.
