The Los Cabos municipal government will officially open the newly paved Los Carrizales road in San José del Cabo on Monday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. The project transformed the old dirt track known as Camino Viejo into a paved route connecting downtown San José del Cabo with the Guaymitas neighborhood.

A Former Dirt Track Becomes an Alternative Route

For years, local drivers have used the unpaved Camino Viejo as an informal shortcut to avoid congestion on San José del Cabo’s main avenues. The road’s poor condition made it a rough ride, particularly during the rainy season when dirt roads in the region can become impassable.

The municipal government rehabilitated and paved the full stretch, turning it into a proper alternative route. The upgrade is expected to reduce travel times for daily commuters moving between downtown and the Guaymitas area on the outskirts of town.

Traffic Relief for a Growing City

San José del Cabo, home to roughly 136,000 residents, has experienced rapid growth in recent years. That growth has put increasing pressure on the city’s road network, particularly along the main corridors leading into and out of the downtown core. An additional paved route between central San José and surrounding neighborhoods could help ease bottleneck conditions during peak hours.

The Guaymitas neighborhood sits on the periphery of the city, and residents there have long relied on the main avenues or the unimproved Camino Viejo to reach the centro. The new road gives them a direct, paved connection.

Public Invited to Handover Ceremony

The Los Cabos municipal government has invited the public to attend the formal handover ceremony on Monday evening. The event will take place on site at the completed road at 6:30 p.m. The announcement did not specify the total cost of the project or the length of the road.
