The Los Cabos municipal government officially handed over five new soccer fields built through Mexico’s federal Mundial Social program, a nationwide initiative tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The fields are spread across Cabo San Lucas, three locations in San José del Cabo including the Villas de Cortez neighborhood, and the Santa Cruz subdistrict.
A National Program Reaches Baja California Sur
The Mundial Social program is run by SEDATU (the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development), the federal agency responsible for urban planning and housing. Its goal is to build or restore 1,200 soccer fields across 29 Mexican states ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada. Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey will host official tournament matches beginning June 11.
While Los Cabos is not a World Cup host city, the federal program channels infrastructure funding to communities across the country. The five new fields give residents in multiple neighborhoods access to free, maintained public sports facilities in areas that have historically lacked them.
Maintenance and Access Plans
The municipality’s acting president instructed the local sports institute to guarantee permanent maintenance for all five fields. The directive also called for proper lighting and accessible hours so school leagues and community tournaments can use the facilities consistently. Youth leagues and neighborhood competitions are expected to be the primary users.
The lack of maintained public sports infrastructure has been a long-standing issue in the Los Cabos municipality, where rapid population growth has outpaced the construction of community facilities. San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas have seen significant residential expansion in recent years, particularly in working-class neighborhoods like Villas de Cortez, where one of the new fields is located.
World Cup Fever Across Los Cabos
The field openings come as World Cup excitement builds across the region. The 2026 tournament kicked off on June 11 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and local interest is running high. Hotels and resorts in Los Cabos, including the Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort, have set up dedicated watch party venues for the tournament’s duration.
