Ribbon Cutting, inauguation

Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez inaugurated a new multi-sport complex in the rural community of Caduaño on Monday, completing a 21 million peso (approximately $1.05 million USD) project that brings professional-grade athletic facilities to an area well outside the tourist corridor.

The facility, nicknamed “La Bombonera,” spans more than 6,000 square meters. It features a synthetic turf soccer field, stadium-style lighting, renovated bleachers, bathrooms, locker rooms, and a perimeter fence. Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío joined Agúndez at the ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside local athletes and residents.

Pro Baseball Player Returns for Ceremony

The event drew added attention when Javier “Canelo” Amador, a Caduaño native who currently plays for the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican Baseball League (LMB), addressed the crowd. Amador thanked the mayor for investing in his hometown’s athletic infrastructure.

Caduaño sits roughly 80 kilometers northeast of Cabo San Lucas along the Sierra de la Laguna foothills, on the road toward the East Cape. The small farming and ranching community has historically had limited public sports facilities compared to the more developed areas around San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

Mayor Pledges Additional Upgrades

During the ceremony, Agúndez announced plans to add a roof structure over the complex in a future phase. He also pledged to address other infrastructure requests from community members who attended the event.

The 21 million peso investment is part of a broader pattern of municipal spending on sports facilities in communities outside the main hotel zone. While resort areas along the tourist corridor have access to private athletic venues, rural delegaciones like Caduaño have long relied on basic, often deteriorating fields for organized sports.

The synthetic turf field and professional lighting at La Bombonera will allow the community to host league matches and regional tournaments that previously required travel to San José del Cabo. The project was first reported by the Los Cabos municipal government website.
