Municipal authorities in Los Cabos held a working meeting on April 8 with federal agencies to coordinate improvements in order, security, and urban image at the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The session brought together the XV Ayuntamiento (city government) of Los Cabos, the National Port System Administration (ASIPONA), and the Mexican Navy (SEMAR).
Municipal Secretary Alberto Rentería Santana led the meeting. The focus was on keeping the marina zone, one of Cabo San Lucas’s most important commercial and tourist areas, functioning properly for residents and visitors alike.
Permits and Licenses on Friday’s Agenda
A follow-up technical meeting with ASIPONA is scheduled for Friday. That session will address permits and licenses for businesses operating in and around the marina. The review could affect tour operators, waterfront restaurants, and other vendors who depend on the marina boardwalk for foot traffic.
The marina has been a flashpoint for enforcement efforts in recent months. In February, a multi-agency operation targeting aggressive timeshare sellers, unauthorized vendors, and crowded walkways drew attention from visitors and local media. That operation involved municipal police, SEMAR, and tourism inspectors working together to clear unauthorized activity from the boardwalk.
A History of Competing Interests at the Marina
The Cabo San Lucas Marina has also been at the center of a broader concession dispute. In April 2024, ASIPONA took possession of the port from its previous operator, IGY Marinas, a subsidiary of the U.S.-based MarineMax. MarineMax called the takeover illegal in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Since then, ASIPONA has managed the facility directly.
The marina serves as the departure point for whale watching tours, snorkeling trips to Land’s End, sunset cruises, and sport fishing charters. It also hosts dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops along its boardwalk. For the thousands of tourists who walk through daily, the marina is often their first impression of Cabo San Lucas beyond the airport.
Tuesday’s meeting is the latest step in a broader push by Los Cabos authorities to professionalize management of the waterfront area. Details on specific enforcement actions or new regulations are expected after Friday’s technical session.
The meeting was first reported by Colectivo Pericú and confirmed by the official website of the XV Ayuntamiento de Los Cabos.
