Los Cabos municipal officials met with U.S. Consul General Christopher Teal this week to tighten coordination on security and emergency preparedness for American residents and visitors. The meeting covered hurricane season protocols, preventive safety measures, and how the two governments share information that shapes U.S. travel advisories for the region.

Los Cabos receives roughly four million tourists per year, with Americans making up the largest share. The municipality’s Tourism Directorate and its Foreign Residents office both participated in the talks, alongside U.S. consular staff based at the consular agency in San José del Cabo.

Travel Advisory Data at the Center of Talks

A key focus of the meeting was ensuring that U.S. travel advisories reflect current, verified local data rather than outdated or incomplete information. The secretary general’s office noted that recent updates to U.S. travel alerts for the area have tracked closely with ongoing security improvements in Los Cabos. Baja California Sur currently sits at a Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”) advisory from the U.S. State Department, a lower risk level than many other Mexican states.

For the municipal government, keeping that advisory level stable is both a public safety matter and an economic one. An upgrade to a higher warning level could directly affect tourism bookings, hotel occupancy, and the broader economy of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

On-the-Ground Support for Americans

The coordination extends beyond advisory language. Day-to-day support for Americans in Los Cabos runs through the Tourist Assistance Center (CATTAC) on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. That office handles lost passports, migration questions, legal guidance, and consumer complaints through Mexico’s federal consumer protection agency, PROFECO. The meeting aimed to streamline how CATTAC and consular staff work together on cases involving U.S. citizens.

Americans living in or traveling to Baja California Sur can enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security alerts. The 24-hour emergency line for U.S. citizens abroad is +1-202-501-4444. From the U.S. or Canada, the number is +1-888-407-4747.

Hurricane Season Preparedness

With Baja California Sur now well into hurricane season, both sides discussed emergency response coordination. Los Cabos has historically surged resources during peak tourism and storm periods, deploying Navy personnel, lifeguards, and mobile information points to beaches and tourist corridors. The meeting with Teal’s office covered how consular and municipal teams would communicate during a major weather event affecting American nationals.

The meeting was first reported by the Los Cabos municipal government on its official website.
