Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez has requested a 21-day temporary leave of absence from the XV Ayuntamiento, the municipal government council. The leave begins June 23 and runs through July 12, 2026.
José Manuel Larumbe will serve as acting municipal administrator during the mayor’s absence. The reason for Agúndez’s leave was not specified in the official request.
Leave Comes During a Busy Period for Los Cabos
The three-week gap falls during one of the busiest stretches of the summer season in the Los Cabos corridor, which includes Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and the Tourist Corridor between them. Municipal business, including permits, infrastructure projects, and local ordinances, will run through Larumbe’s office during the window.
Agúndez took office on September 29, 2024, after being sworn in at the main plaza in San José del Cabo. An architect by profession, he previously served as a Los Cabos councilman and a Baja California Sur state lawmaker. His father, Narciso Agúndez, served as Los Cabos mayor from 1999 to 2002 and as governor of Baja California Sur from 2005 to 2011.
Recent Security Changes Add Context
The leave announcement comes just days after a major security shakeup in the municipality. On June 13, Mayor Agúndez oversaw the appointment of Mexican Navy Captain José Antonio Galicia Mixquititla to lead the Los Cabos Public Security Directorate. That move followed isolated security incidents in inland residential neighborhoods, including a confrontation in the La Ballena area of San José del Cabo in early June.
Under Mexican municipal law, mayors may request temporary leaves from their city councils for personal or political reasons. The ayuntamiento must approve the request, and day-to-day operations transfer to a designated acting administrator. The leave does not affect the mayor’s overall term.
Residents and business owners who have pending matters with the Los Cabos municipal government should expect to interact with Larumbe’s office between June 23 and July 12. Originally reported by Noticias La Paz.
