The Los Cabos municipal government has begun inspecting temporary emergency shelters across the municipality ahead of the 2026 hurricane and rainy season, which officially starts May 15. Civil Protection Director Francisco Cota Márquez said teams are reviewing structural conditions, access routes, utilities, capacity, supply logistics, and perimeter security at every facility on the municipal shelter registry.

Five Agencies Coordinate Shelter Audits

The inspection effort involves five municipal agencies working together: Civil Protection, Municipal Police, Fiscal Inspection, the Education department, and DIF Los Cabos (the municipal social services agency). Inspectors are visiting each registered shelter to verify it meets safety standards before any storms develop.

Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez said the inspections are part of the municipality’s prevention strategy. He called advance planning the key tool for protecting residents during cyclone season.

What Inspectors Are Checking

At each shelter, crews are evaluating six specific areas: the structural integrity of the building, the condition of access routes leading to and from the facility, whether water and electricity are functioning, how many people the shelter can hold, the supply chain for food and emergency materials, and the security of the building’s perimeter. Shelters that fail any category could be removed from the official registry or flagged for repairs before the season’s peak months.

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 through November 30. Peak storm activity in the Los Cabos area historically falls between August and October, when warm ocean temperatures fuel tropical cyclone development. The 2025 season brought Hurricane Lorena in September, which flooded streets across Los Cabos, and Hurricane Priscilla in October.

Shelter Readiness Has Been a Recurring Concern

Public shelter readiness in Los Cabos has drawn attention in past years. The U.S. Consulate has previously warned that storm shelters in the area may carry limited supplies, advising travelers to prepare their own emergency kits. Most hotels and resorts in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo maintain their own on-site shelters, typically in ballrooms or ground-floor meeting spaces, along with backup power and communication equipment.

Residents and visitors in Los Cabos can monitor shelter locations and storm updates through the municipal Civil Protection office. The inspection program was first reported by the Los Cabos municipal government at loscabos.gob.mx.
