Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez reported progress on three major federal projects: a 260-bed IMSS regional hospital in San José del Cabo, 704 social housing units nearing completion, and the nearly finished Fonatur roundabout overhaul in the tourist corridor.
The mayor said President Claudia Sheinbaum may visit Los Cabos soon to inaugurate the roundabout and review the hospital and housing projects. Federal authorities are still evaluating the timing of the visit.
New IMSS Hospital to Serve Half a Million Residents
The planned IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social) Regional General Hospital will offer 260 beds and 46 medical specialties. President Sheinbaum broke ground on the facility during a visit to San José del Cabo on May 17. The hospital site has cleared its first phase, with land preparation and permits secured. Construction is expected to take roughly two years.
Los Cabos has long faced a shortage of public medical capacity relative to its fast-growing population, which now exceeds 400,000 full-time residents. The new hospital is designed to serve approximately half a million people across the municipality. The existing IMSS clinic in San José del Cabo handles far fewer specialties and lacks the bed count needed for a city of this size.
Fonatur Roundabout Gets 450 Million Peso Overhaul
The Glorieta de las Mujeres Libres, formerly known as the Fonatur roundabout, sits at one of the highest-traffic intersections in Los Cabos. The site sees upward of 60,000 vehicles per day. The 450 million peso (approximately $23.6 million USD) project includes a four-lane underpass beneath the roundabout. Agúndez Gómez described the project as near completion, though previous reports placed the expected finish date around summer 2026. As of late August, the project was 25% complete.
The roundabout connects San José del Cabo’s tourist zone to the Transpeninsular Highway and commercial areas. Construction has already caused significant traffic disruption, particularly for travelers heading to and from Los Cabos International Airport along the 32-kilometer corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
704 Social Housing Units Nearly Ready
Under the federal Vivienda para el Bienestar program administered by the National Housing Commission (Conavi), 704 social housing units are nearly ready for occupancy. These apartments target young professionals and service-industry workers who have been priced out of the local real estate market. Los Cabos housing costs have risen sharply alongside the tourism boom, creating a chronic shortage of affordable options for the local workforce.
The housing project is part of President Sheinbaum’s national initiative to build one million affordable homes over six years. Los Cabos has been positioned as a model region for that effort.
