Municipal ecology officials in Los Cabos have temporarily paused equipment testing at a sand-pumping operation near Puerto Los Cabos marina to protect the least tern, a threatened shorebird currently in its nesting season along the adjacent coastline in San José del Cabo.

The pause came after city inspectors visited the dredging site and confirmed that the work holds valid federal authorization from SEMARNAT (Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources). Officials also verified that the operation uses only offshore sand, not material drawn from the nearby Estero de San José del Cabo, a state ecological reserve since 1994 that serves as critical habitat for over 100 bird species.

Estuary Concerns Addressed

Some residents had raised concerns that the dredging project was pulling sand from the estuary, which sits between the marina and downtown San José del Cabo. The estuary is home to the critically endangered Belding’s yellowthroat and is a recognized Important Bird Area in Mexico. Municipal officials said the inspection confirmed the sand-pumping draws exclusively from offshore sources.

The least tern, known locally as the gallito marino, nests on open sandy shorelines during the summer months. The species is classified as threatened under Mexican federal law. Researchers from Pronatura Noroeste and other conservation groups have documented least tern nesting activity along the San José del Cabo coastline for years.

Dredging Timeline Extended

The municipality negotiated the temporary halt in machinery testing to avoid disturbing active nesting sites. Full dredging operations will not resume until the breeding cycle ends, a condition that will likely push back the timeline for beach restoration on the north side of the marina. That stretch of coastline has experienced persistent erosion problems linked to the marina’s construction.

Los Cabos officials said they will maintain permanent on-site supervision throughout the project to ensure compliance with SEMARNAT’s environmental authorizations. The oversight includes monitoring sand sources, noise levels, and impacts on wildlife in and around the estuary.

Puerto Los Cabos marina, located about five minutes east of downtown San José del Cabo, is a large-scale development featuring yacht slips, golf courses, hotels, and residential communities. The dredging project aims to restore sand to eroded beaches and improve coastal conditions for both the environment and nearby property owners.
