The massive overpass and underpass project replacing the Fonatur roundabout in San José del Cabo has reached roughly 80% completion, according to Urban Development Director Roberto Flores Rivera. The 700 million peso (approximately $40.5 million USD) project now carries an early May finish date if crews maintain their current pace.
What the Project Includes
Officially called the Glorieta de las Mujeres Libres project, the upgrade replaces what has long been the worst traffic bottleneck in Los Cabos. The roundabout sits at the junction connecting the San José del Cabo hotel zone, the Los Cabos International Airport highway, and the Tourist Corridor leading to Cabo San Lucas. An estimated 62,000 vehicles pass through the intersection daily.
The finished design will feature a depressed (below-grade) passage with four lanes, two in each direction between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Lateral roads, return bridges, pedestrian walkways, a bike path, and public lighting will round out the infrastructure. The federal Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) has said the project will cut travel times by up to 25 minutes and benefit 351,000 local residents along with 2.6 million annual tourists.
Construction Progress and Timeline
Work began in May 2025. The project stood at 62% complete in January 2026 after a holiday pause, then reached 72% by late February when Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez confirmed that heavy structural work, including crossbeam placement, was finished. Now at 80%, crews are focused on upper-section paving, lateral lane activation, curbing, and repaving across multiple sites. Those sites include the City Market to Magisterial neighborhood corridor and the Las Mañanitas descent.
The federal government invested 320 million pesos ($18.2 million USD) in 2025 and allocated another $22 million USD for 2026. Construction has generated 2,100 jobs and currently operates on nine work fronts with 102 workers and 18 machines.
Detours and Travel Advice
Partial closures remain in effect. Drivers can use the alternate route behind Chedraui to bypass the construction zone. Travelers heading to or from the airport should allow an extra 30 minutes for lane shifts and detours until work wraps up.
