The Los Cabos municipal government distributed 3 million pesos ($167,000 USD) in student scholarships on March 24, reaching 4,974 students across the municipality. The program, covering the September through October school period, targets students from primary school through university level.
Cabo San Lucas Receives Largest Share
Cabo San Lucas led all communities with 2,051 students receiving a combined 1.2 million pesos ($66,800 USD). San José del Cabo followed closely with 1,890 beneficiaries and an investment of 1.19 million pesos ($66,100 USD). Three rural communities also received funds: Miraflores (357 students, 210,500 pesos), Santiago, and La Ribera.
In Cabo San Lucas, students picked up payments at the Auditorio Municipal “Leonardo Gastélum Villalobos,” located behind the main delegación offices. San José del Cabo recipients collected their aid at the basketball court inside the Auditorio “Fernando I.,” a civic building in the town center.
Municipal Education Director Leads Rollout
Juana Ortiz Cruz, the municipal director of education, coordinated the simultaneous distribution across all delegaciones. Ortiz Cruz said the program serves as an incentive for students to stay enrolled and continue their academic training. The payments were organized jointly by the Dirección General de Desarrollo Social (the municipal social development office) and Ortiz Cruz’s education department.
Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez has framed the scholarships as part of his administration’s broader education policy. The municipality is home to roughly 350,000 residents, and school dropout rates remain a persistent concern across Baja California Sur, particularly in communities where tourism industry jobs pull teenagers out of classrooms early.
The municipal scholarship program operates separately from private efforts in the region. The Green Scholarship Program, funded by the U.S. nonprofit Charity Development of Los Cabos, also provides four-year university scholarships to students in Cabo San Lucas. That program has operated since 2004 and focuses on students from low-income families.
The next round of municipal scholarship payments has not yet been announced, according to the Los Cabos municipal government website.
