The Los Cabos city council unanimously approved a new public safety director and a new municipal comptroller during an extraordinary session led by Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez.
José Antonio Galicia Mixquititla will serve as director general of Public Safety, Preventive Police, and Municipal Traffic. He takes command of a force that added 50 new officers in late 2025 and recently put 30 new patrol vehicles into service. Gastón Guadalupe Martínez Molina was appointed head of the Contraloría Municipal, the internal watchdog body responsible for auditing government spending and investigating public servants.
Infrastructure Spending Plan Also Approved
In the same session, council members approved a 138.4 million peso (roughly $6.8 million USD) public works and social action plan for fiscal year 2026. The funds come from FAISMUN, a federal infrastructure grant program formally known as the Fondo de Aportaciones para la Infraestructura Social Municipal. FAISMUN money is earmarked for water, sewer, road, and other basic infrastructure projects in underserved areas.
The spending plan covers the Los Cabos municipality, which includes both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo as well as smaller communities stretching north along the Baja California Sur coast.
Leadership Changes as Mayor Prepares for Leave
The appointments come as Mayor Agúndez Gómez has announced a 21-day leave beginning June 23. A deputy will lead the municipality during that period. By installing new heads of both public safety and financial oversight before stepping away, the mayor is putting his chosen leadership team in place ahead of the transition.
Galicia Mixquititla inherits a police department that has been expanding. Los Cabos added 50 municipal officers during the 2025 holiday season and deployed over 1,700 security personnel across key areas during peak travel periods. The municipality also recently invested in 30 new patrol cars to strengthen coverage along the tourist corridor and in residential neighborhoods.
The new comptroller, Martínez Molina, will oversee how the city spends its budget, including the newly approved FAISMUN funds. The Contraloría is responsible for internal audits, transparency reports, and disciplinary proceedings against municipal employees accused of misusing public resources.
