The Los Cabos municipal council approved the donation of five parcels of public land during its 22nd regular session, directing property toward federal affordable housing and two new childcare facilities in San José del Cabo.

Three parcels totaling 15,315 square meters in San José del Cabo’s La Ejidal neighborhood will go to CONAVI, the National Housing Commission, for use in the federal Programa Nacional de Vivienda (National Housing Program). The land transfers are part of the same federal initiative that allocated 176 homes to Los Cabos in its first phase late last year.

New Childcare Centers Planned for San José del Cabo

Council members also approved donating two additional parcels to IMSS, Mexico’s social security institute, for the construction of early childhood care centers known as CECIs (Centros de Educación y Cuidado Infantil). The centers will be operated by IMSS and are intended to serve working families in the municipality.

La Ejidal is one of San José del Cabo’s established residential neighborhoods on the inland side of the city. The area has also been the focus of other recent municipal infrastructure work, including an electrification project on Fresno Street approved by the council in December with a budget of roughly $200,000 USD.

Senior Municipal Appointments Confirmed

The session confirmed two high-level administrative appointments. Juan Carlos Gutiérrez Sánchez was named chief administrative officer (oficial mayor), and Amado Ruiz Espinoza was appointed director of DIF Los Cabos, the municipal family services agency. DIF manages social assistance programs including food banks, disability services, and family support across the municipality.

Council members also approved a new regulation creating a Children’s City Council (Cabildo Infantil), a civic participation program designed to involve young residents in local government processes. The regulation establishes a formal framework for the program going forward.

Housing Pressure Drives Land Donations

Los Cabos has faced growing pressure on its affordable housing stock as the tourism-driven economy attracts workers from across Mexico. The municipality’s decision to transfer public land to CONAVI follows a pattern seen in other fast-growing Mexican resort cities where local governments contribute property to federal housing programs to accelerate construction.

Mayor Christian Agúndez has emphasized transparency and coordination with federal agencies as priorities for his administration. The council’s actions were first reported by the Los Cabos municipal government.
