Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez announced the completion of more than 60 street paving projects across the municipality, along with the rehabilitation of 14 sports facilities and public parks. The work is part of a broader infrastructure push that also includes a new cultural center budgeted at over 250 million pesos (roughly $13.5 million USD).

The largest sports investment is a new complex in Santa Anita, a fast-growing residential area between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. That facility cost nearly 60 million pesos (about $3.2 million USD). A large new park in the Altamira neighborhood of Cabo San Lucas is also among the completed projects.

Cultural Center Is the Biggest Single Project

The most expensive item on the list is the Centro Cultural Teatro Miguel Lomelí, a multi-use performance and cultural complex. The total budget exceeds 250 million pesos. Phase one, at 125 million pesos (approximately $6.7 million USD), is slated for completion this year. Phase two is scheduled to begin in early 2027.

The city council earlier this year outlined plans for 20 additional paving projects and seven new parks in 2026. Agúndez called road maintenance a permanent priority, noting that the work goes beyond opening new streets to include rehabilitating existing ones for better mobility and safety.

Part of a Larger Infrastructure Wave

The paving and parks campaign is one piece of a much larger municipal agenda. In January, Agúndez and Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Castro Cosío launched “Unidos por Los Cabos,” a program targeting sports facilities, 20 new parks, beautification of the downtown centers of both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, and a 20% reduction in traffic accidents. That program also calls for 200 new safe pedestrian crossings and 120 well-marked bus stops.

Separately, the municipality has invested 240 million pesos in mobility projects including pavement, safer crossings, and pothole repairs. The city also recently acquired 20 new garbage trucks, specialized pothole repair equipment, and 20 water tankers, 15 of them designated for Cabo San Lucas.

Los Cabos continues to face pressure from rapid population growth and rising tourist arrivals. Over 7.5 million passengers passed through Los Cabos International Airport in 2024, a 40% increase from 2021.
