Los Cabos Municipal Civil Protection Director Francisco Cota Márquez said on June 10 that recent seismic activity in the region falls within normal parameters for tectonic plate adjustment. Earthquakes measuring above magnitude 3.0 are being recorded, and his agency is conducting continuous monitoring of any events that could pose a risk to residents and visitors.
Cota Márquez urged people in Los Cabos to take basic earthquake safety precautions now, before the next tremor hits. His recommendations include staying away from windows, glass panels, and suspended objects during shaking, and identifying safe zones in homes, workplaces, schools, and public spaces ahead of time.
A Region With a Seismic Track Record
Los Cabos sits near the boundary of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, making low-level seismic activity a regular occurrence at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. The region recorded 89 earthquakes in a single week in September 2025, though only two or three were strong enough for people to feel. A magnitude 4.8 quake on September 1, 2025 shook homes in both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, causing minor damage to a section of the Los Cabos International Airport check-in area.
After that September swarm, Cota Márquez announced plans to install a seismic early warning system in coordination with Mexico’s National Seismological Service (SSN) and the research center CICESE. The system would work similarly to Mexico City’s SASMEX network, giving residents seconds of advance notice before shaking waves arrive. Hotels in Los Cabos also reviewed evacuation plans and coordinated inspections with Civil Protection at that time.
What To Do During a Tremor
Civil Protection’s core advice is straightforward: drop, take cover, and hold on. Move away from exterior walls, large windows, and anything that could fall, such as light fixtures or shelving. If you are in a car, stay inside and pull over until shaking stops. Near the coast, move to higher ground once shaking ends as a precaution against any potential tsunami.
The agency also recommends keeping a basic emergency kit at home with water, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and copies of important documents. Residents and visitors should follow the official Protección Civil Los Cabos social media channels for real-time updates during seismic events.
Preparedness Drills Continue
Los Cabos participated in Mexico’s 2026 National Emergency Drill on May 6, which simulated an 8.1 magnitude earthquake with a tsunami warning. Civil Protection personnel were deployed across key locations to assess evacuation routes and response times. Cota Márquez has said prevention and public safety remain top priorities for the current municipal administration under Mayor Christian Agúndez.
The latest advisory was first reported by Colectivo Pericú.
