The Los Cabos Public Services Department installed 16 new LED streetlights along Boulevard Tiburón in La Playa, a coastal community near San José del Cabo. Crews also completed electrical reconnection, maintenance, and network optimization work on the boulevard’s lighting system.
La Playa sits east of downtown San José del Cabo, close to the estuary and the old fishing village area. Boulevard Tiburón is one of the community’s main roads, used by both local residents and visitors heading toward the beach. The new LED fixtures are designed to improve nighttime visibility for pedestrians and drivers while cutting energy consumption compared to older lighting technology.
Part of a Broader Lighting Push
Public Services Director Manuel Ernesto Montaño Castro said the city will continue modernizing street lighting across the municipality. He said the department is prioritizing zones with the greatest safety needs.
The Boulevard Tiburón project follows similar work completed in late May. According to a separate announcement from the Los Cabos municipal government, the city also installed six new LED streetlights and repaired two existing fixtures in the La Choya and San Vicente neighborhoods during that same period. Both projects fall under a broader infrastructure campaign led by Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez.
LED Upgrades Across the Municipality
LED streetlights last significantly longer than traditional sodium vapor lamps and use less electricity. Municipalities across Baja California Sur have been replacing older fixtures in recent years as costs for LED technology have dropped. For Los Cabos, the upgrades also address a practical concern: poorly lit streets contribute to traffic accidents and make pedestrians more vulnerable after dark.
La Playa has seen steady residential growth as San José del Cabo expands eastward. The community includes a mix of local families, small businesses, and some vacation rental properties. Better street lighting on Boulevard Tiburón will serve all of these groups.
The city has not announced a total number of LED installations planned for 2026 or a budget for the program. Montaño Castro indicated that additional projects are in the pipeline for other neighborhoods across the municipality.
