La Paz Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero announced that the city’s new Centro de Transferencia waste management facility has reached 80% completion, with the main structure now finished. Paving work connecting the waste transfer center to the Transpeninsular Highway (Mexico Highway 1) stands at 90% complete.

Crews are still finishing floors, access routes for operational vehicles, and administrative offices at the site. No official opening date has been set.

What the Facility Will Do

A waste transfer center serves as a midpoint between garbage collection routes and a final disposal site. Trucks collect trash across the city, then dump it at the transfer station. From there, larger vehicles haul compacted waste to a landfill or processing facility. The system reduces the number of long-haul trips collection trucks must make, cutting fuel costs and speeding up pickup schedules.

La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur with a population of roughly 300,000 in the municipality, has long struggled with solid waste management. Illegal dumping along roadsides and in arroyos remains a persistent problem, particularly in outlying colonias where collection service is inconsistent. The new facility is intended to increase the city’s overall waste processing capacity.

Road Connection Nearly Finished

The road link to the Transpeninsular Highway is a critical piece of the project. Heavy waste haulers need direct highway access to move loads efficiently to the final disposal site without routing through residential streets. With paving at 90%, that connection is close to ready.

The Transpeninsular Highway runs the length of the Baja California peninsula and serves as La Paz’s primary artery for freight and commercial traffic. A direct link from the transfer center to the highway should keep large trucks off smaller neighborhood roads.

Quiroga Romero, who took office in 2021, has made infrastructure upgrades a priority during her administration. The waste transfer center is one of several public works projects currently underway in the municipality. City officials have not yet announced the total cost of the project or a timeline for the remaining 20% of construction.
