Construction on La Paz’s new southern ring road has reached 65% completion across all four segments, Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero announced at a press conference this week. The project, officially named the Circuito Urbano Sur Oriente Bahía Concepción, spans more than three kilometers of new pavement and is expected to wrap up between late June and early July.

The most advanced section, running from Puente Cajón to Calle Mezquitito, is now 80% complete. Workers have already finished the bridge at that location and laid more than 8,000 square meters of asphalt. Three other segments are progressing on schedule.

Billions in Joint State and Municipal Funding

The ring road is a joint effort between the municipal and state governments, backed by funding from FOIS (Fondo de Infraestructura Social, the Social Infrastructure Fund) totaling over 88 million pesos (approximately $4.9 million USD). The investment covers all four segments of the circuit, including the bridge, road surface, drainage, and related infrastructure.

Note: The original Spanish-language source reports the figure as “88 mil millones de pesos,” which would translate literally to 88 billion pesos. This is almost certainly a reporting error in the source; context and the scale of the project point to 88 million pesos as the accurate figure.

Traffic Relief for Southern Neighborhoods

The new route is designed to serve several fast-growing neighborhoods on La Paz’s southern and southeastern edges, including Península Sur, Valle del Mezquite, Campestre Mezquitito, and Bledales. These residential areas have long lacked direct road connections, forcing drivers onto congested main arteries.

Mayor Quiroga estimated the ring road will reduce vehicle traffic in the area by 15 to 20 percent once open. She said travel times through the zone should drop to under 20 minutes, a notable improvement for residents who currently face long delays during peak hours.

What Comes Next

City officials said the remaining 35% of work includes finishing pavement on the three less-advanced segments, completing lane markings, and installing signage. If the late June to early July timeline holds, the full circuit should be open before the summer rainy season hits in earnest.
