La Paz Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero launched a permanent neighborhood intervention program called “Presidenta en tu Barrio” with an early morning cleanup session in the Valle del Mezquite subdivision. Crews began work at 6 a.m. and removed more than 55 tonnes of waste from the area, clearing illegal dumping sites that had accumulated across the neighborhood.

The program’s first session also included tree trimming, pothole repairs, streetlight maintenance, road painting, and new signage installation. Valle del Mezquite sits in the southern growth corridor of La Paz, in an area that includes the Península Sur, Campestre Mezquitito, and Bledales neighborhoods along Boulevard Forjadores.

Morning Cleanup, Afternoon Social Services

Under the program’s structure, morning sessions will focus on physical infrastructure and cleanup. Afternoon sessions will shift to social services for residents, though the city has not yet specified which services will be offered or on what schedule.

The mayor personally supervised the kickoff session. The program is designed as a permanent, rotating initiative that will target neglected neighborhoods across the municipality, not a one-time event.

Waste Containers Available to Prevent Dumping

Illegal dumping has been a persistent problem in Valle del Mezquite and other fast-growing subdivisions on the outskirts of La Paz. To address this, the city reminded residents that three fixed waste containers in the Valle del Mezquite area are available Monday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The new program comes as the La Paz municipal government ramps up infrastructure work ahead of the 2026 hurricane season. The city has separately begun sediment removal in the El Cajoncito arroyo and cleaning of stormwater collectors across multiple neighborhoods to reduce flood risks.

La Paz has also recently completed road improvements in the same southern corridor near Valle del Mezquite, aimed at easing congestion on Boulevard Forjadores. The “Presidenta en tu Barrio” initiative adds a neighborhood-level component to that broader push.
