Property owners in La Paz who owe back taxes on fines and surcharges have until July 31 to claim a 40% discount on those penalties, according to Municipal Treasurer Jassiel Enríquez Varela. The discount is part of a sliding-scale program the city launched in May to encourage residents to settle overdue property tax balances.

The program, known locally as the predial discount, started with a 50% reduction for payments made between May 15 and June 30. That window has now closed. Property owners who pay their full outstanding balance in a single lump sum during July will receive the 40% break. Those who wait until August will see the discount shrink again to 35%.

Where and How to Pay

La Paz offers several in-person payment locations. Property owners can visit the Palacio Municipal (City Hall), the OOMSAPAS La Paz water utility office, Tránsito Municipal (the traffic department), Plaza Galerías, Plaza del Sur, or the city’s municipal markets. Multiservice kiosks at select locations operate 24 hours a day.

Online payment is also available through three channels: the App La Paz mobile application, the official city website at lapaz.gob.mx, and the Visor Urbano portal. Both the app and the Visor Urbano portal are available in English, a detail worth noting for foreign property owners who may not read Spanish fluently.

Why It Matters for Property Owners

Property taxes in La Paz are relatively low by North American standards, often running just a few hundred dollars per year. But fines and surcharges for late payment can accumulate quickly. Under Mexican law, unpaid penalties must be cleared before a property can be sold. This program gives owners a chance to reduce that accumulated debt by nearly half.

La Paz regularly runs seasonal discount programs on property taxes. In past years, the city has offered early-payment discounts of 10% to 35% for those who pay their annual predial ahead of schedule. The current program is different: it targets owners who have already fallen behind and owe penalties, not those paying on time.

The single lump-sum requirement is key. Partial payments do not qualify for the discount. Owners must pay the entire outstanding balance in one transaction to receive the 40% reduction.
