Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío inaugurated the new “Impulso” Boxing Gym in La Paz’s Vista Hermosa neighborhood, adding a professionally equipped training facility to the capital city’s growing sports infrastructure.
The gym features a professional-grade ring and competition-level equipment. It is open to boxers of all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned competitors. Castro Cosío framed the project as a tool for youth development and crime prevention, saying the facility gives young people a safe, structured space as an alternative to antisocial behavior and addiction.
90 Million Pesos for Gymnasium Renovation
At the same event, the governor announced a first-phase investment of 90 million pesos (roughly $4.9 million USD) to modernize La Paz’s Gimnasio de Usos Múltiples, the city’s main multi-purpose gymnasium. The renovation is expected to bring the aging venue up to modern standards for indoor sports and large events.
The state government also reported that 20 sports fields across Baja California Sur have already been rehabilitated and resurfaced as part of a broader infrastructure program. The effort spans multiple municipalities and covers facilities used for soccer, baseball, and other popular disciplines.
Part of a Statewide Sports Push
The boxing gym opening comes as La Paz expands its public sports options on multiple fronts. The municipal government’s “Impulso Deportivo” program, run through the Municipal Sports Institute (IMD), has been working to bring organized athletic programs to underserved neighborhoods across the city. During the first quarter of 2026, the program reported record-level support for local athletes.
La Paz has also seen progress on a large-scale sports complex near the 8 de Octubre bridge, which includes trails, a bike path, a multidisciplinary center, and fields for baseball, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. That project, championed by La Paz Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero, was designed by the architecture firm CCA and aims to formalize the city’s baseball and softball infrastructure to meet modern safety and quality standards.
The Vista Hermosa neighborhood, where the new boxing gym sits, is a residential area on La Paz’s north side. The gym’s location was chosen to serve communities that previously lacked nearby access to organized sports facilities.
The announcement was first reported by the Baja California Sur state government through its official website.
