Construction of a new overlook park and pedestrian stairway in La Paz’s Colina de la Cruz neighborhood has crossed the halfway point, city officials confirmed this week. The mirador structure itself is 50% complete, while the stairway connecting lower hillside neighborhoods to the park has reached 80% completion.

Stairway and Lighting Near Completion

The stairway, or escalinata, will link residents in the lower sections of the hillside colonia to the new overlook park above. Crews are also installing lighting poles and fixtures along the route as part of the project, a step that will improve safety for pedestrians using the stairway after dark.

Colina de la Cruz sits on the hills above central La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur. The neighborhood is one of several elevated colonias on the city’s western hillsides that offer sweeping views of the Bay of La Paz and the surrounding desert landscape.

What the Mirador Will Offer

Mirador parks, or overlook parks, are common in Mexican cities built on hilly terrain. They typically feature paved walkways, seating areas, guardrails, and public lighting. La Paz already has several informal viewpoints on its hillsides, but few have been developed with dedicated infrastructure for public use.

The Colina de la Cruz project is part of ongoing municipal efforts to improve infrastructure in La Paz’s hillside neighborhoods. These colonias often lack paved roads, proper drainage, and safe pedestrian access between different elevation levels. A formal stairway with lighting addresses a basic connectivity issue for residents who currently navigate steep, unpaved paths.

City officials did not announce a specific completion date for the project, though the advanced progress on the stairway portion suggests it could open ahead of the mirador structure. No cost figures for the project were disclosed in the city’s update.
