The city of La Paz opened registration this week for its annual free summer program, offering children and teenagers courses in swimming, music, art, and sports at municipal facilities across the state capital. The program runs from July 7 through August 8, 2025, and enrollment is now available online and in person.
La Paz Has Run Free Municipal Summer Programs Since 2019
The La Paz city government operates the program through its Dirección Municipal del Deporte, the municipal sports directorate, and the Instituto Municipal de la Juventud, which oversees youth services. Registration opened this week through the city’s official online portal and at the Casa de la Juventud on Calle Jalisco between Aquiles Serdán and Encinas in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood.
The program targets three age groups. Children ages 4 to 6 can enroll in introductory swimming, baby gym, and basic motor skills courses. Kids ages 6 to 12 have access to swimming, basketball, volleyball, soccer, artistic gymnastics, and taekwondo. Teenagers ages 12 to 17 can take courses in music, painting, theater, hip-hop dance, Korean pop dance, boxing, and several other disciplines.
All courses are free. The city requires only a registration form, a copy of the child’s birth certificate or CURP (Mexico’s national ID number), a medical fitness letter from a doctor, and two photographs. For the swimming courses specifically, families must also provide a doctor’s note confirming the child is healthy enough to swim.
Classes take place at several municipal venues in La Paz. Swimming instruction happens at the Unidad Deportiva Bicentenario, the city’s main sports complex. Youth and teen arts courses are held at the Casa de la Juventud. Sports courses are spread across the city’s network of public fields and gymnasiums.
La Paz has expanded the program over recent years. Previous editions focused primarily on sports, but this year’s offering includes a broader cultural component with music instruction using guitars, ukuleles, and percussion instruments. Theater and visual arts courses are also new additions for 2025. The city government has framed the program as both a recreational outlet and a crime prevention tool, keeping young people engaged during the long summer break when Mexican public schools are closed from early July through mid-August.
Enrollment Details and Practical Information for La Paz Families
Online registration is available through the La Paz municipal government’s website. In-person enrollment takes place at the Casa de la Juventud, which is open Monday through Friday during business hours. The city has not announced a cap on enrollment, but popular courses like swimming tend to fill quickly based on past years.
Families living in La Paz’s east cape communities or outlying colonias should note that all instruction takes place at centrally located municipal facilities. There is no transportation provided. Parents are responsible for drop-off and pickup at each venue.
The program is open to all residents regardless of nationality. Foreign-born children living in La Paz can register with a passport or other identification in place of a CURP, though the city recommends contacting the sports directorate in advance to confirm documentation requirements. The medical fitness letter, known as a carta de aptitud médica, can be obtained from any licensed physician in Mexico, including private clinics.
For younger children in the 4 to 6 age group, the swimming and baby gym courses require a parent or guardian to be present during sessions. The older age groups attend independently. Class schedules vary by discipline, with most sessions running in morning hours to avoid the peak afternoon heat that La Paz experiences in July and August, when temperatures regularly exceed 40°C (104°F).
The program also includes a closing ceremony and exhibition during the final week of August, where participants showcase what they learned. In previous years, this event has drawn hundreds of families to the Unidad Deportiva Bicentenario.
Registration remains open through early July or until courses reach capacity. The La Paz municipal government published full details on its official social media channels and website this week.
