La Paz Mayor Milena Quiroga announced a multi-agency Holy Week security operation that will put more than 250 municipal officers on duty across the municipality during Semana Santa 2026. The deployment is part of a larger 659-person task force coordinating local, state, and federal forces to patrol beaches, roads, and public spaces throughout the holiday period.

659 Personnel From Local and Federal Agencies

The municipal contingent includes 150 public safety officers, 62 traffic police, and 25 firefighters. Commerce inspectors will also be on duty to monitor businesses during the peak tourism week. Federal agencies joining the operation include the National Guard (Guardia Nacional), the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), and the Mexican Army (SEDENA).

La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, sits on the Sea of Cortez about 130 miles north of Los Cabos. The city draws tens of thousands of domestic and international visitors during Holy Week, with popular gathering spots along the Malecón waterfront, Balandra Beach, and Playa Tecolote near the ferry terminal to Mazatlán.

Traffic Enforcement and Beach Patrols

Quiroga called on residents and visitors to drive responsibly and avoid alcohol behind the wheel. The 62 traffic officers will focus on key intersections and the coastal road connecting La Paz to its most popular beaches north and east of the city center.

Beach cleanup was another priority Quiroga stressed. La Paz has expanded environmental enforcement in recent years, particularly at Balandra, where visitor access is capped at 450 people per day to protect the fragile ecosystem. The city’s fire department will also staff beach rescue positions during the holiday.

Holy Week 2026 runs from April 13 through April 19, with the heaviest visitor traffic expected Thursday through Sunday. The security operation will remain active through the full vacation period, according to the La Paz municipal government.
