La Paz’s XVIII Municipal Council unanimously approved a 356 million peso (roughly $17.8 million USD) public works budget for 2026, funding 61 infrastructure projects across the Baja California Sur capital. The vote, held on May 5, formally adopted the city’s Annual Public Works and Related Services Program for the fiscal year.

61 Projects Set for 2026

The spending plan covers road repairs, utility upgrades, and other city improvements throughout the municipality. All council members voted in favor, giving the program full political backing heading into the budget cycle.

At 356 million pesos, the plan averages roughly 5.8 million pesos (about $290,000 USD) per project. The program establishes the legal framework that allows the city to begin procurement, contracting, and construction on each listed project during 2026.

What the Approval Means

Under Mexican municipal law, a city cannot spend public money on infrastructure without an approved annual works program. The unanimous vote clears that legal hurdle and locks in the 61 projects as the official priority list for the year. Any project not on the list would require a separate council vote to receive funding.

La Paz has grown rapidly in recent years, placing heavy demand on roads, water systems, and drainage infrastructure. The city’s population has strained existing services, and residents in colonias across the municipality have long pressed for basic upgrades like paved streets and improved water delivery.

Next Steps

With the program now approved, the municipal government can begin issuing contracts and setting construction timelines. Specific project locations and schedules have not yet been publicly detailed. Residents should expect construction activity to increase as individual projects move from planning to execution over the coming months.
