The Baja California Sur state government and the Mexican Chamber of Construction (CMIC) broke ground Tuesday on a major rehabilitation of the Punto de Encuentro Comunitario in La Paz’s Colonia 8 de Octubre. The two combined projects carry a price tag of nearly 11.7 million pesos (roughly $585,000 USD) in social infrastructure spending.

A 9.5 million peso ($475,000 USD) investment will expand the community center with a climate-controlled multipurpose hall. The new space will host workshops, job training, and cultural activities for residents of the working-class neighborhood. The project also includes new offices, playgrounds, and a soccer field.

Women’s Center Gets Private Counseling Rooms

A separate 2.2 million peso ($110,000 USD) renovation will overhaul the on-site Centro Libre para Mujeres, a free women’s resource center. The upgraded facility will feature private, soundproofed consultation rooms and a supervised children’s playroom. Free counseling services in psychology, social work, and legal guidance will expand at the center.

The women’s hub focuses on preventing gender-based violence and promoting economic independence. The soundproofed rooms are designed so women can speak freely during counseling sessions while their children are cared for in a separate supervised area.

Colonia 8 de Octubre Gets Infrastructure Boost

Colonia 8 de Octubre sits in a working-class section of La Paz and is home to Casa Cuna, the state orphanage. The Punto de Encuentro Comunitario connects directly to the orphanage grounds, making it a shared resource for both institutional and neighborhood use.

The CMIC partnered with the state government on the construction contract. The chamber represents construction firms across Mexico and frequently collaborates with state agencies on public works projects in Baja California Sur.

The rehabilitation covers both the structural expansion of the community center and the specialized buildout of the women’s facility. Once complete, the site will serve as a combined social services hub offering recreation, education, legal aid, and mental health support under one roof.
