The Baja California Sur state government and the La Paz city council have approved construction of the second phase of the South-East Urban Circuit, a $4.9 million roadway project in one of the capital’s fastest-growing areas. Work is now underway on the initial section, which runs from the Valle del Mezquite neighborhood to the access point for South Peninsula Boulevard.

An Alternative to Forjadores Boulevard

The new road is designed to relieve traffic on Forjadores Boulevard, the heavily used main artery through La Paz’s southeast corridor. Residents and commuters in the area have long dealt with congestion as housing developments and commercial zones have expanded outward from the city center.

The circuit will consist of three sections when complete. The first section now under construction connects Valle del Mezquite to South Peninsula Boulevard. A third section, linking the circuit to the Los Planes Highway, is currently in the bidding phase, according to the project announcement.

What the Project Includes

Construction crews are installing paved streets built with high-resistance concrete. The project scope also includes sidewalks, curbs, protective barriers, public lighting, and traffic bollards. These features point to a modern urban road standard, not just a basic paving job.

The $4.9 million price tag (roughly 85 million pesos at current exchange rates) represents a joint investment between the state and municipal governments. La Paz’s southeast zone has seen rapid residential growth in recent years, with new subdivisions spreading along the corridor between the city center and the highway to Los Planes, a small agricultural town about 45 minutes southeast of downtown.

What Residents Should Know

Drivers who use the southeast corridor daily should expect construction activity along the route. The city has not yet published a completion timeline for the current phase or a start date for the Los Planes Highway connection. Forjadores Boulevard will likely see continued heavy traffic until the circuit opens as an alternative.

La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur with a population of roughly 300,000, has been investing in road infrastructure as new neighborhoods push the city’s footprint further south and east. The South-East Urban Circuit is one of the larger mobility projects the city has undertaken in recent years.
