The Los Cabos Municipal Health Institute will offer free dog and cat sterilization at two locations on April 29 and 30. Pet owners can bring their animals to Parque Los Cangrejos in Cabo San Lucas on Tuesday, April 29, or to Cancha San Bernabé in San José del Cabo on Wednesday, April 30. Both clinics open at 8:00 a.m.
Appointments are required. Pet owners can call (624) 240-6945 to schedule a time slot in advance.
What Pet Owners Need to Know
Animals must fast for at least eight hours before the procedure. Female pets cannot be pregnant, nursing, or in heat at the time of surgery. These requirements are standard for sterilization procedures and help ensure the safety of the animal under anesthesia.
The clinics are part of the municipality’s ongoing program for responsible animal population control. Los Cabos officials say the effort aims to reduce pet abandonment and improve the welfare of companion animals across the region.
Stray Animal Challenge in Los Cabos
Stray dogs and cats remain a common sight throughout Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Several nonprofit organizations, including the Los Cabos Humane Society (founded in 1992) and PET Los Cabos, have been running spay and neuter campaigns in the municipality for years. The Humane Society has operated for nearly 30 years, focusing on rescue, adoption, and sterilization to curb overpopulation.
The municipal government’s free clinics complement those nonprofit efforts by removing the cost barrier entirely. Private veterinary sterilization in Los Cabos can run anywhere from 800 to 2,500 pesos (roughly $45 to $140 USD), depending on the size and sex of the animal.
Parque Los Cangrejos is located in central Cabo San Lucas, while Cancha San Bernabé sits in one of San José del Cabo’s established residential neighborhoods north of the town center. Both locations are accessible by local bus routes.
