The Baja California Sur state government is replacing the artificial turf at Estadio Guaycura in La Paz, the 5,209-seat home stadium of Club Atlético La Paz. A state official inspected progress on the turf replacement project on June 10, confirming the work is being carried out in coordination with the professional soccer club.

The existing artificial surface has reached the end of its useful life for professional play. Estadio Guaycura, located on Calle 5 de Mayo in La Paz’s Zona Central, hosts matches for Atlético La Paz in the Liga de Expansión MX, Mexico’s second-tier professional soccer league. The stadium originally opened in 1967 and underwent a major renovation in 2018 and 2019 that added new seats, LED lighting, luxury boxes, and its current artificial turf.

Old Turf Headed to Community Field

In a cost-saving measure, sections of removed turf still in usable condition will be relocated to Estadio Maracaná in the Colonia 8 de Octubre neighborhood. That community facility regularly hosts amateur leagues and local tournaments. The state government said the transfer allows it to upgrade a public sports venue at no additional expense.

The Subsecretario de Administración (Undersecretary of Administration) for Baja California Sur conducted the June 10 inspection, though the state did not release a specific timeline for completing the turf installation. The project is entirely state-funded, with the stadium owned by the Baja California Sur state government.

Stadium’s Role in La Paz Sports

Estadio Guaycura is one of three major sports venues in La Paz, alongside the baseball-specific Estadio Arturo C. Nahl and the indoor Arena La Paz. Atlético La Paz has played at the stadium since 2022. The field measures 105 by 68 meters, meeting professional standards for Mexican league play.

The 2018 expansion brought the stadium’s capacity to its current 5,209 seats and added changing rooms and accessibility features for disabled spectators. A February 2019 friendly match between Chivas and América legends inaugurated that round of renovations.

This latest turf replacement is the first major playing surface upgrade since that 2018-2019 overhaul. The story was first reported by the Baja California Sur state government’s official website.
