Ensenada will host its first International Circus Festival from June 19 to 21, bringing acrobats, aerialists and jugglers from across Mexico and abroad to a three-ring big-top tent. Admission is free. The Ensenada circus festival ties into the annual competition of the International Jugglers’ Association, marking the first time either event has landed in Baja California.

International Jugglers’ Association Founded in 1947

The International Jugglers’ Association, or IJA, is one of the oldest organizations in circus arts. Founded in 1947, the group has held annual festivals in cities across the United States and Canada for decades. Its competitions draw performers specializing in toss juggling, contact juggling, cigar boxes and diabolo, among other disciplines.

The IJA’s decision to connect its annual competition with Ensenada’s new festival is a notable departure. The association has rarely, if ever, staged its primary competition in Mexico. Ensenada’s selection places the city alongside past IJA host cities like Las Vegas, Indianapolis and Winston-Salem.

The festival program will include workshops, a gala performance and competitive events inside the big-top tent. Organizers say participants will arrive from multiple Mexican states and from abroad, though a full roster of countries has not been published. The municipal government of Ensenada described the event as a way to strengthen circus arts in Mexico while offering free cultural access to families, students and visitors.

Ensenada Has Expanded Cultural Programming Since 2023

The circus festival fits into a broader pattern of cultural investment by Ensenada’s municipal government. The city has steadily added events beyond its traditional tourism anchors of wine, seafood and cruise ship traffic. The Fiestas de la Vendimia wine harvest festival, held each August in the Valle de Guadalupe, has drawn international attention for years. But Ensenada has also pushed into performing arts, public art installations and music programming.

CEARTE, the state cultural arts center on Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas, serves as a regular venue for theater, dance and visual arts. The Hermanos Vázquez touring circus, one of Mexico’s best-known commercial circus companies, is also running a separate Ensenada season this June near CEARTE. That gives the city two simultaneous circus programs from different organizers, an unusual concentration for a municipality of roughly 550,000 people.

Ensenada’s tourism office has focused on extending visitor stays beyond the typical day trip from Tijuana or San Diego. Cultural events serve that goal directly. A free weekend festival gives cruise passengers, wine country visitors and local residents a reason to spend an extra day or two in the city center.

The strategy also targets shoulder seasons. Ensenada’s peak tourism months are July through October. A mid-June festival fills a gap before summer crowds arrive, when hotel rooms are easier to book and restaurant waits are shorter.

Circus Arts in Mexico Have Deep Roots

Mexico has a long circus tradition. The Circo Atayde, founded in 1888, toured the country for more than 130 years before closing in 2019. The Hermanos Vázquez circus has operated since 1969. Mexican performers have competed internationally in juggling, aerial silks, trapeze and clowning for generations.

But dedicated circus festivals are rare in Mexico compared to Europe and South America. Argentina hosts the Festival Internacional de Circo de Buenos Aires. France holds the Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in Paris each January. Mexico has lacked a comparable annual gathering, particularly one with free public admission.

Ensenada’s festival could begin to fill that gap. The combination of IJA competition credentials and municipal government backing gives the event institutional weight that purely commercial circus shows lack. If the first edition draws strong attendance, organizers may push to make it annual.

Locations and Schedules for Both Circus Events

The International Circus Festival runs June 19, 20 and 21 inside a big-top tent. The exact location has not been confirmed in published materials, so attendees should check the Ensenada municipal government website at ensenada.gob.mx for updates before heading out.

The Hermanos Vázquez circus is a separate ticketed production near CEARTE with its own schedule and pricing. The two events have different organizers and different programs. Visitors planning a circus-themed weekend should verify times and addresses for each independently.

From Tijuana, Ensenada is roughly 80 miles south on the toll highway, about a 90-minute drive. From Rosarito, the drive takes about an hour. Paid parking is available near most downtown Ensenada venues.

The festival opens Thursday, June 19, with the gala performance and IJA competition expected to anchor the weekend schedule. Details on the event were published by the Ensenada municipal government and reported by Gringo Gazette North.
