Canadian Ambassador to Mexico Cameron MacKay visited Los Cabos municipal authorities on Monday for a working meeting at the Palacio Municipal in San José del Cabo. The session focused on bilateral cooperation in tourism, institutional relations, and safety protocols for Canadian visitors.
Municipal Secretary Alberto Rentería Santana welcomed the Canadian delegation on behalf of Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez. Honorary Consul Sara Pilote and embassy staff also attended the meeting.
Canada’s Growing Role in Los Cabos Tourism
Municipal Tourism Director Ana Gabriela Navarro called Canada one of the most important international markets for the destination. She pointed to sustained growth in Canadian arrivals and strong direct air connectivity as key factors behind the relationship.
The numbers back that up. More than 215,000 Canadians visited Los Cabos in 2025, according to the Los Cabos Tourism Observatory. Projections for 2025 had initially targeted 240,000 arrivals, a 20% year-over-year increase. Canadian visitor growth reached 12.2% in early 2025, making Canada the fastest-growing international source market after the United States.
At peak winter season, Los Cabos receives roughly 43 nonstop flights per week from eight Canadian cities: Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Kelowna, Victoria, and Winnipeg. Canadian travelers stay an average of 10 nights, nearly double the 5.7-night average for U.S. visitors, and they spend roughly twice as much per trip as their American counterparts.
Visitor Safety and Consular Protocols
Monday’s discussions also covered visitor assistance protocols, including how Canadian nationals receive consular support in Los Cabos. These protocols determine what happens when a foreign visitor needs emergency help, faces a legal issue, or requires medical evacuation.
The meeting fits a broader pattern of diplomatic engagement between Canada and Mexican resort destinations. Government initiatives in Los Cabos have increasingly focused on safety and tourism infrastructure as the destination courts higher-value international visitors. Rodrigo Esponda, managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board, has previously said that Canadian travelers seek “places where they feel safe, welcomed, and inspired.”
Seat capacity from Canada to Los Cabos is projected to grow more than 13% in 2026, according to official projections. That expansion would further cement Canada’s position as a critical market for the resort corridor that stretches from San José del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas.
