Municipal authorities in Cabo San Lucas are coordinating a rescue plan for El Cerrito del Timbre, a hilltop public space that has fallen into disrepair due to accumulated trash and neglected infrastructure. The Los Cabos Institute of Culture and Arts (ICA) led a working meeting on April 19 to bring together multiple city departments for the cleanup effort.
ICA director Tanya Covarrubias Martínez organized the session with staff from agencies that operate on the grounds of El Cerrito del Timbre. The meeting produced agreements for a joint cleanup day involving Public Safety officers, the Public Services department, and the Cabo San Lucas delegation, led by delegate Karina de la O Uribe.
Trash Buildup and Infrastructure Gaps
The primary concern is a buildup of solid waste that has made the hilltop site less safe and less accessible. Officials said reinforcing basic services at the location is a priority. The plan also calls for collaboration with private-sector partners to clarify property boundaries and fund infrastructure improvements at the site.
Covarrubias Martínez called the care of El Cerrito del Timbre “a shared responsibility.” She said keeping the space in good condition strengthens the well-being of everyone who visits. No specific date for the cleanup day has been announced yet.
A Long History of Neglect and Revival
El Cerrito del Timbre sits on a hill in central Cabo San Lucas and has long served as a community gathering point, viewpoint, and cultural venue. The site has housed arts and cultural events for decades. Yet it has gone through repeated cycles of neglect. As far back as 2011, local officials were already calling for its rescue after years of abandonment.
Just one year ago, in April 2025, the city organized a cleanup and reforestation event at El Cerrito del Timbre to mark International Earth Day. That effort involved the General Directorate of Ecology and Environment along with several other municipal offices. The fact that a new cleanup is already needed in 2026 points to ongoing maintenance challenges at the site.
The ICA oversees cultural programming across the Los Cabos municipality, which includes both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Residents interested in volunteering can watch for announcements from the institute or the Cabo San Lucas delegation regarding scheduled cleanup dates.
