Municipal cleanup crews in Cabo San Lucas have removed 414.5 tons of trash, brush, and debris as part of a temporary jobs program now ramping up ahead of hurricane season. The effort has also cleared 1,039 cubic meters of dirt and sediment from ditches, roadsides, and storm drainage channels across the city.
José Ramón Sánchez Guluarte, the Public Services coordinator for the Cabo San Lucas delegation, announced the figures on July 8. The work is being carried out through the Temporary Employment Program (Programa de Empleo Temporal), run by the XV Ayuntamiento de Los Cabos in coordination with the General Directorate of Public Services.
Major Roads and Public Spaces Targeted
Crews have focused on several of the city’s main corridors. Work has been completed on Avenida Nicolás Tamaral, Avenida Leona Vicario, and Boulevard Constituyentes. Teams also cleaned stretches of the Transpeninsular Highway between the Termoeléctrica area and La Virgencita, plus the San Pedro to Cabo San Lucas road and the road to La Candelaria.
Public facilities received attention as well. Brigades worked at the Don Koll Sports Complex, the Leonardo Gastélum soccer stadium, the Lienzo Charro rodeo grounds, Cerro de la Cruz, Panteón 1 cemetery, the Casa de los Abuelos senior center, and the El Sauzal sub-delegation office.
Flood Prevention Drives the Timeline
Preventive drain clearing, known locally as desazolve, is a critical part of the program. Clogged storm channels in Cabo San Lucas have caused rapid street flooding in past hurricane seasons, particularly in low-lying neighborhoods. By removing sediment and debris from drainage infrastructure now, the municipality aims to reduce that risk before the peak storm months of August through October.
The program launched roughly six weeks ago with about 100 workers and serves a dual purpose: cleaning up the city while providing temporary income for local families. Sánchez Guluarte said the crews will continue operating on a permanent basis across different sectors of Cabo San Lucas throughout the rainy season.
The cleanup builds on earlier efforts this year, including a junk removal day in the El Arenal neighborhood in May that targeted waste accumulation along Ejido Street.
