At least 30 people were injured Sunday night when a personnel transport bus rolled over on the Transpeninsular Highway near the community of Mesa de Santa Anita in the Los Cabos municipality. No fatalities were reported in the initial account of the bus rollover near San José del Cabo.
The accident occurred in the San José del Cabo area of Baja California Sur. The bus was carrying workers, though the name of the operating company has not been released. The cause of the rollover remains under investigation.
Personnel Buses Serve Los Cabos Workers
Personnel transport buses are a common sight on the Transpeninsular Highway, which is the main corridor connecting the resort areas of Los Cabos. Thousands of hospitality and construction workers ride these company-operated buses daily to reach hotels, resorts, and job sites along the Tourist Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. The vehicles are separate from the public Ruta del Desierto bus system that tourists typically use.
Mesa de Santa Anita sits just south of the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) along Highway 1. The Ruta del Desierto public bus route also originates from Santa Anita, with service starting as early as 4:30 a.m. and running until 11:00 p.m. The proximity of Sunday’s crash to the airport corridor means the area is well traveled by both workers and visitors.
Traffic Disruptions Possible on Highway 1
Drivers on the Transpeninsular Highway should be aware of possible emergency vehicle activity and lane closures near Mesa de Santa Anita in the days following the crash. Highway 1 is the only major road linking San José del Cabo, the Tourist Corridor, and Cabo San Lucas, so any disruption can cause significant delays.
Authorities have not released details about which hospitals received the injured or the severity of their conditions. The injury count of 30 indicates the bus was carrying a substantial number of passengers at the time of the rollover. Updates on the investigation and the condition of those hospitalized are expected from local authorities in the coming days.
