A geology student at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) in La Paz is documenting the science behind the glowing blue waters that draw visitors to the coast each summer. Daniela Pérez Collazo’s research into bioluminescence in La Paz confirms that the phenomenon peaks between June and December, with El Saltito beach on the Bahía de La Paz among the most reliable viewing spots in the region.
Pérez Collazo is conducting the study under the supervision of Dr. Tatiana A. Acosta Pachón, a researcher in UABCS’s Department of Earth Sciences. The project examines how and why certain organisms in BCS waters produce visible light, and what practical applications that chemistry holds for medicine and environmental monitoring.
Dinoflagellates Drive the Blue Glow Along the BCS Coast
The blue light that appears on certain nights along the La Paz shoreline comes from dinoflagellates, single-celled microalgae that emit light when disturbed by wave action or the movement of a kayak paddle. These organisms are not unique to Baja California Sur. Bioluminescent bays exist in Puerto Rico, the Maldives, and parts of Southeast Asia. But the Bahía de La Paz offers one of the most accessible displays in western Mexico.
The chemistry is straightforward. Inside these organisms, a compound called luciferin reacts with an enzyme called luciferase in the presence of oxygen. That reaction releases energy as visible light, typically a blue or blue-green glow. Pérez Collazo notes that this process occurs in a wide range of marine life, from microorganisms to jellyfish, squid, and certain fish species. In the shallow waters near La Paz, though, dinoflagellates are the primary source.
The phenomenon is not constant. Bioluminescence depends on water temperature, nutrient levels, and the concentration of dinoflagellates in a given area. In the Bahía de La Paz, conditions tend to align most favorably from June through December. El Saltito, a rocky beach area south of the city’s malecón, has become a well-known spot for nighttime viewing. Locals and tour operators also report sightings near Balandra and along the Pichilingue corridor during peak months.
Visibility requires darkness. Moonless nights or new moon phases produce the best conditions, since ambient light washes out the glow. Calm, warm water also helps. Windy nights with heavy surf can disperse the dinoflagellates and reduce the effect.
Biomedical and Environmental Uses of Bioluminescent Organisms
Pérez Collazo’s research goes beyond the visual spectacle. Her study examines how luciferases extracted from bioluminescent organisms are already used in biomedical research worldwide. Scientists use these enzymes as biological markers to track gene expression, monitor tumor growth, and test drug efficacy in laboratory settings. The technique, known as bioluminescence imaging, has become a standard tool in cancer research and pharmaceutical development over the past two decades.
“Understanding how bioluminescence works has allowed the development of technologies that help visualize complex biological processes and improve tools for medical research,” Pérez Collazo said.
The environmental applications are also concrete. Bioluminescent bacteria can serve as living sensors for water quality. When exposed to certain contaminants, including heavy metals and pesticides, these bacteria dim or stop producing light. Researchers have used this property to create low-cost toxicity tests for drinking water and wastewater. In a state where coastal development continues to put pressure on marine ecosystems, that kind of monitoring tool has direct relevance.
Pérez Collazo’s study also explores the potential for bioluminescent systems to inform sustainable lighting technology. While commercial applications remain in early stages globally, researchers in France and Denmark have experimented with bioluminescent plants and bacteria as alternatives to electric street lighting.
Practical Tips for Seeing the Glow Near La Paz
El Saltito sits roughly 15 minutes south of downtown La Paz by car. Several local tour companies offer nighttime kayak tours during peak season, typically priced between 800 and 1,500 pesos (roughly $45 to $85 USD) per person. Paddling through bioluminescent water amplifies the effect, since each stroke disturbs the dinoflagellates and triggers a burst of light.
For those going independently, the key variables are timing and darkness. Check a lunar calendar before planning a trip. New moon nights in July, August, and September tend to produce the strongest displays. Arrive after 9 p.m. and give your eyes at least 10 minutes to adjust. Avoid using phone screens or flashlights near the water.
Swimming is possible at some spots, though El Saltito’s rocky shoreline makes kayaking or wading more practical. Balandra, about 25 kilometers north of La Paz, offers calmer, sandy conditions but bioluminescence there is less predictable.
Pérez Collazo’s research is ongoing at UABCS, with results expected to contribute to broader public understanding of marine ecosystems in the Sea of Cortez. The study was first reported by BCS Noticias.
