Baja California Sur will open five new upper-secondary schools in Los Cabos before the next school year begins, expanding public education options in one of the state’s fastest-growing municipalities.

The state Education Secretariat (SEP BCS) announced the new campuses as part of a push to broaden high school coverage across the region. Three of the five schools will be located in Cabo San Lucas, and two will open in San José del Cabo.

Three New Campuses in Cabo San Lucas

In Cabo San Lucas, two preparatorias under the Margarita Maza system and one Centro de Bachillerato Tecnológico Agropecuario (CBTA), an agricultural and technical high school, will begin operations. These campuses will serve students from the neighborhoods of Ampliación Gastélum, Fuentes de Bellavista, El Chamizal, and El Taste.

These colonias sit on the expanding edges of Cabo San Lucas, where rapid residential growth has outpaced school construction in recent years. The CBTA campus will offer career-oriented technical training alongside a standard high school curriculum.

Two Schools for San José del Cabo

On the San José del Cabo side, a third Margarita Maza preparatoria will open in the colonia La Ballena. A new building for CETMAR 39, a federal marine science and technology high school (Centro de Estudios Tecnológicos del Mar), will open in Ampliación Vista Hermosa.

State education official Reyna Solís said all five schools will use a semi-in-person model designed for students in vulnerable circumstances. The format combines classroom time with remote coursework and includes university tutoring support and flexible scheduling.

Free Enrollment and Federal Scholarships

Enrollment at all five campuses is free. Students will also be eligible for the federal Benito Juárez scholarship, which pays 1,900 pesos (roughly $105 USD) every two months. The scholarship program targets young people from low-income households to reduce dropout rates.

Los Cabos has seen explosive population growth driven by the tourism and construction industries. According to Solís, the expansion aims to guarantee more educational spaces for young people in the municipality and close coverage gaps in high school access.

The announcement was reported by the Baja California Sur state government (bcs.gob.mx).
