Officers from the Baja California Sur State Public Security Secretariat (SSPE) are conducting workplace safety workshops at hotels across La Paz and Los Cabos. The program covers first aid, self-defense techniques, and gender-based violence prevention for hospitality workers.
Members of the State Preventive Police have already visited six hotel properties. Named locations include the Viceroy, Royal Solaris, Courtyard by Marriott, and Marina Costa Baja. The workshops target both employees and employers in the tourism sector.
What the Training Covers
Each session includes hands-on instruction in emergency first aid and basic self-defense. A separate module addresses recognizing and responding to gender-based violence, an issue Mexican authorities have prioritized in recent labor safety guidelines.
The SSPE designed the program specifically for the hospitality industry, where front-line staff regularly interact with guests and are often the first to encounter emergencies. Hotel employees learn protocols for medical incidents, physical confrontations, and situations involving threats to guests or coworkers.
Context for the Initiative
The training push comes during a period of heightened attention to security in Baja California Sur. In April 2025, the U.S. Embassy issued a security alert for Los Cabos and La Paz following a series of violent incidents, including a shootout in Cabo San Lucas and bus arsons in both cities. The state government has since taken several steps to reinforce public safety, including a 27.1 million peso (roughly $1.4 million USD) investment in 16 new police vehicles announced in October 2025.
Baja California Sur remains one of Mexico’s safer states overall. The U.S. State Department rates it at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), compared to Level 3 for Baja California to the north.
Plans to Expand
The SSPE said it plans to extend the workshop program beyond hotels. Future sessions will target educational institutions and civil society organizations throughout the state. No specific timeline for that expansion has been announced.
The program was first reported by the Baja California Sur state government through its official website.
