The Baja California Sur state government will open donation collection centers across all five municipalities starting July 6 to gather supplies for Venezuelan families affected by the June 24 earthquakes. The centers will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through July 10.
Drop-off locations include the Government Palace in La Paz and municipal plazas in Los Cabos, Comondú, Loreto, and Mulegé. The state is accepting non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, cleaning supplies, first-aid materials, and diapers for both children and adults.
Multiple State Agencies Coordinating the Effort
The Secretariat of Government, Civil Protection, and SEDIF (the state family development agency, Sistema Estatal para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia) are jointly coordinating the drive. Municipal DIF offices in each of the five municipalities will handle logistics and help organize delivery of collected goods to affected families in Venezuela.
The June 24 earthquakes were devastating. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, two powerful quakes struck off Venezuela’s northern coast west of Caracas within roughly a minute of each other. The first registered magnitude 7.2, and the second hit magnitude 7.5 at a shallower depth of about six miles. The epicenters were located near Morón, about 105 miles west of the capital.
What to Donate and Where
The International Rescue Committee has reported more than 1,700 deaths and over 750 collapsed buildings. National water systems have failed across seven Venezuelan states, and road closures, power outages, and communication disruptions continue to hamper relief efforts. The disaster has compounded an existing humanitarian crisis: nearly 8 million people inside Venezuela already needed urgent support before the earthquakes struck.
The U.S. State Department has cautioned that unsolicited material donations can clog supply chains and divert resources. However, the BCS government has established a structured collection system with defined drop-off points, accepted items, and a clear logistics chain through DIF offices to move goods where they are needed.
Residents in La Paz can bring donations directly to the Government Palace on Calle Isabel la Católica in the downtown area. In other municipalities, the main plaza in each cabecera (municipal seat) will serve as the collection point. The five-day window runs Sunday, July 6, through Thursday, July 10.
The initiative was announced by the BCS state government through its official website, bcs.gob.mx.
