The Baja California Sur state government delivered a school bus to students at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) campus in La Ribera, providing weekday transportation for more than 50 university students from rural East Cape communities.

Governor Víctor Castro Cosío’s administration handed over the vehicle on April 16 in response to a direct request from students at the La Ribera campus. The bus will serve students traveling from Santiago, Santa Cruz, and surrounding communities in the rural eastern zone of the Los Cabos municipality.

A Long Commute Through the East Cape

La Ribera sits roughly 70 kilometers south of San José del Cabo along the East Cape corridor, a stretch of coast and sierra that has few public transit options. Students from Santiago, about 20 kilometers inland, and from smaller communities in the area previously had to arrange their own transportation to reach the campus on weekdays.

Kiabeth Deniz Muñoz, the head of the UABCS La Ribera campus, welcomed the delivery. She said the bus fills a critical gap in student mobility and pledged that the vehicle would be used responsibly.

State and University Officials Attend Ceremony

Juan de Jesús Pérez Agúndez, the UABCS Los Cabos campus director, attended the ceremony. He described the bus delivery as part of a broader cooperative effort between educational institutions and state government. Luis Alberto Huerta, head of the UABCS Los Portales campus, also joined the event alongside students and local public servants.

The UABCS La Ribera campus serves one of the most remote student populations in the state university system. The East Cape area, while increasingly popular with foreign residents and tourists, still lacks much of the infrastructure found in Los Cabos’ urban core. Paved roads connect Santiago and La Ribera to San José del Cabo, but bus service has historically been limited.

The delivery is one of several recent state investments in rural BCS education and infrastructure under the Castro Cosío administration, which took office in 2021.
