Baja California Sur’s state attorney general’s office (PGJE) will keep its Early Attention Units open around the clock in all five municipalities during the summer vacation period that begins July 13. The announcement covers crime-reporting offices in Los Cabos, La Paz, Comondú, Loreto, and Mulegé.
The PGJE confirmed that staff rotations and on-call guards will ensure uninterrupted service at each location. Residents and visitors can walk in to file a police report or criminal complaint at any hour, any day, throughout the break.
How to File a Report or Tip
The PGJE operates a free, anonymous tip line at 800 474 5322. Callers do not need to provide personal information. The office also offers a mobile app called DAC PGJE BCS, available for download on major smartphone platforms, which allows users to submit confidential reports from their phone.
Both tools are available year-round but take on added importance during the summer months. July and August bring a surge of domestic and international visitors to beach towns across the state, particularly in the Los Cabos corridor and La Paz. Higher foot traffic in tourist zones can coincide with an uptick in petty theft, fraud, and other incidents.
What Expats and Visitors Should Know
Filing a criminal complaint in Mexico, known as a “denuncia,” is the essential first step for any insurance claim or police investigation. Without a formal report on file, authorities cannot open a case. The process typically requires a government-issued ID (a passport works for foreigners) and a description of the incident.
The Early Attention Units serve as the initial point of contact. Staff there can guide complainants through the paperwork and, if needed, connect them with a public prosecutor. Spanish is the primary language at these offices, so non-Spanish speakers may want to bring a bilingual friend or hire a translator.
The PGJE’s decision to maintain full operations during the school holiday period follows a pattern seen in recent years. Mexican government offices often reduce hours or close satellite locations during vacation weeks, which can leave visitors scrambling to find open services.
For the summer of 2026, that will not be the case at BCS crime-reporting offices. All five municipal units will remain staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until the vacation period ends.
