Los Cabos authorities permanently closed the bar known as Micheladas El Papi on Boulevard Centenario in downtown San José del Cabo on Monday, two days after eight people were hospitalized for suspected intoxication at the venue during the final hours of Semana Santa weekend.

The closure followed a multi-agency inspection that found the bar operating without a valid business license, missing its updated permit renewal, and lacking required environmental clearances for a tourist-zone establishment. An attached restaurant was also cited for failing to produce mandatory waste collection manifests and cleaning logs.

Eight Hospitalized, Five Found Unconscious

The incident that triggered the crackdown occurred at approximately 4:36 a.m. on Sunday, April 6. The San José del Cabo Fire Department received a report of multiple people unconscious inside El Papi. Firefighters dispatched four units to the scene and worked alongside Cruz Roja Mexicana paramedics and Saint Luke’s ambulance crews.

First responders found eight people suffering severe symptoms. Five of those eight were unconscious when crews arrived. All were transported to local hospitals. The Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) opened an investigation into the incident.

Officials Point to Illicit Substance, Not Alcohol

Alberto Rentería Santana, the general secretary of the Los Cabos municipal government, told reporters that the intoxication was likely not caused by alcoholic beverages. Rentería said a “illicit substance” appeared to be responsible, though official toxicology results have not yet been released.

Manuel Barajas Gerardo, head of the municipality’s Fiscal Inspection department, confirmed that Monday’s operation resulted in a definitive closure after inspectors documented multiple regulatory violations. Barajas stated that the actions were carried out “with strict adherence to the law and with firmness for legality in the municipality.”

More Inspections Promised Across Los Cabos

Rentería said inspections will continue across the municipality, warning that other bars and restaurants operating without proper permits could face similar shutdowns. The enforcement push comes at a sensitive time: Los Cabos draws large crowds of domestic and international visitors during Semana Santa, and the downtown San José del Cabo bar district sees heavy foot traffic during the holiday.

El Papi is located in the Colonia Centro neighborhood, a short walk from the main plaza and the tourist corridor of restaurants and galleries. The bar’s closure was first reported by the Los Cabos municipal government and confirmed by Milenio and Tribuna de México.
