Baja California students will stop attending classrooms on June 29 and finish the school year through distance learning, with the term officially ending July 15. State Education Secretary Irma Martínez Manríquez confirmed the timeline during Governor Marina del Pilar’s weekly press briefing on May 13.
The announcement came after Mexico’s federal education ministry reversed earlier plans to end the school year six weeks ahead of schedule to accommodate the 2026 World Cup. Baja California’s calendar, however, remains unchanged. Martínez Manríquez said the state had already designed its academic schedule with Mexicali’s extreme summer temperatures in mind.
Key Dates for Families
From June 29 through July 15, students will continue with remote learning focused on remedial support in math and reading comprehension. Teachers must finalize and enter grades by July 3. School closing ceremonies will take place between July 6 and July 14.
The next school year is currently scheduled to begin August 31, though state law allows for adjustments. Families should watch for any updates from the Secretaría de Educación de Baja California over the summer.
Heat Season Preparations Already Underway
Governor Marina del Pilar noted during the same briefing that air conditioning units are already being delivered to schools across the state. The effort targets Mexicali and other inland areas where summer temperatures routinely exceed 110°F (43°C). The early shift to remote learning is partly a safety measure to keep children out of classrooms during the worst of the heat.
Baja California has used distance learning windows before, most extensively during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current plan is far more limited in scope, covering roughly two and a half weeks at the tail end of the term rather than entire semesters.
For families enrolled in public schools in Tijuana, Ensenada, Rosarito, Tecate, and Mexicali, the practical change is straightforward: the last day of in-person classes is June 29, and students remain formally enrolled until July 15. Originally reported by Punto Norte.
