The Baja California state government began accepting applications on April 20 for its Proyectos Productivos program, which offers equipment grants worth up to 25,000 pesos (about $1,280 USD) to small entrepreneurs across the state. The application window closes April 24, giving applicants just five days to submit paperwork in person.

Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda announced the program, which is open to entrepreneurs in all seven of Baja California’s municipalities: Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, Tecate, Rosarito, San Quintín, and San Felipe. The grants cover equipment, not cash, for a range of small business types.

What the Grants Cover

Eligible businesses include hair salons, auto repair shops, carpentry workshops, bakeries, and food carts. The program provides the equipment itself rather than a direct cash payment, meaning recipients will receive tools and machinery for their trade.

The initiative is administered through the Secretaría de Bienestar Baja California, the state’s welfare agency. Applicants must submit documents in person at their local Bienestar office during the five-day window.

Required Documents

To apply, entrepreneurs need to bring five items: a government-issued photo ID (credencial de elector or similar), their CURP (Mexico’s unique population registry code), proof of address, a formal quote for the equipment they are requesting, and the supplier’s tax registration certificate (constancia de situación fiscal).

The CURP and tax certificate requirements mean this program is designed for Mexican residents with legal documentation. All paperwork must be gathered before the April 24 deadline.

How to Get More Information

The state government has posted full program details on the Secretaría de Bienestar Baja California’s official social media pages. Applicants can also visit their nearest Bienestar office for guidance on preparing their documents.

At roughly $1,280 USD, the grants are modest but could cover essential startup equipment for micro-businesses: a set of salon chairs, a commercial mixer for a bakery, or basic tools for a carpentry shop. Baja California has run similar small business support programs in previous years through the same agency.
