Baja California will issue special edition 2026 FIFA World Cup license plates at no cost to vehicle owners who voluntarily request them. Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda announced the program alongside a broader sports infrastructure initiative tied to the global tournament.
The commemorative plates will feature a unique design with official FIFA holograms and stickers. The state Treasury Secretary confirmed the plates will be available soon. Drivers can opt in without paying extra fees, and no mandatory plate renewal is required.
How to Get the World Cup Plates
The plates are strictly voluntary. Vehicle owners with cars registered in Baja California can request the World Cup edition when it becomes available. The state has not yet announced a specific start date or whether the plates will be offered at existing vehicle registration offices across all seven municipalities.
For expats and residents who own BC-plated vehicles, the program is straightforward: no hidden charges, no forced renewal. The plates simply replace your current plates with the commemorative design at no additional cost.
Sports Infrastructure Push Across All Seven Municipalities
The governor also announced that Baja California will build 27 new sports courts and rehabilitate 21 existing athletic facilities statewide. The 48 total projects span all seven of the state’s municipalities: Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, Tecate, Rosarito, San Quintín, and San Felipe.
The projects fall under the federal “Mundial Social” program, coordinated with SEDATU (the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development). The initiative carries a budget of more than 50 million pesos (roughly $2.5 million USD) and aims to leave lasting infrastructure in local communities beyond the tournament itself.
BC Athletes Already Competing on the National Stage
State officials noted that Baja California athletes have already earned 78 medals in the ongoing CONADE National Olympics, a point the administration tied directly to its investment in grassroots sports facilities. The 48 new and renovated courts are intended to build on that momentum and provide training spaces for the next generation of athletes.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, kicks off on June 11. While Baja California is not hosting any matches, the state is positioning itself to benefit from the tournament’s proximity and cultural reach.
