Baja California’s state fishing support program for 2026 will stop accepting applications on Thursday, May 28. The Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SEPESCA) announced the deadline this week, giving commercial fishing and aquaculture producers just days to submit their paperwork.
SEPESCA director Alma Rosa García Juárez urged all eligible producers across the state to apply before the cutoff. The program provides financial assistance aimed at improving production efficiency and market competitiveness for Baja California’s fishing and aquaculture sectors.
Who Is Eligible to Apply
The program is open to individuals or businesses that hold a current federal fishing permit, authorization, or concession. Those with a permit renewal already in process also qualify. Applicants must be active fishing or aquaculture producers operating within Baja California.
This is a state-level program, separate from federal fishing regulations and sport fishing licenses. It targets the commercial side of Baja California’s fishing industry, which spans Pacific coast ports from Tijuana south through Ensenada and San Quintín.
What the Program Offers
The state subsidies are designed to help producers upgrade equipment, improve operations, and compete more effectively in domestic and international markets. SEPESCA has not publicly disclosed the total budget for the 2026 cycle or the maximum grant amount per applicant.
Baja California’s commercial fishing fleet is one of Mexico’s largest. The state is a major producer of tuna, sardines, abalone, lobster, and farmed shellfish. State support programs like this one have historically helped smaller cooperatives and independent fishermen access resources that larger operations can fund internally.
How to Apply Before the Deadline
Producers interested in applying should contact SEPESCA directly before Thursday. The agency’s main offices are in Mexicali, with regional outreach through municipal offices in Ensenada and other coastal communities. García Juárez emphasized that no extensions have been announced.
This program does not apply to recreational or sport fishing. Tourists and sport anglers in Baja California purchase separate licenses through the state’s online portal at sportfishing.bajacalifornia.gob.mx.
